Production Area
Chizu Town, Tottori Prefecture
Historical Details and Geographic Characteristics
Originating under the management of feudal estates during the Edo period, Chizu’s forestry began to prosper through the promotion of industry and the use of cedar in natural disaster prevention. Similar to the over 400-year-old keicho cedar, these historic forests are known throughout Japan. As forestation continued even after the wars of the Meiji and Taisho periods, forestry became a major industry with a crucial role.
Chizu City’s cedar is of superior quality and ranks highly even amongst Kyoto Kitayama and Nara Yoshino cedar, as it was nurtured using traditional forestry techniques and has endured harsh seasonal changes throughout the years. Although formerly reserved for wine barrels, it is now primarily used for construction and interior finishes.
Aside from this, there has been an increase in product development for interiors, stationary, and miscellaneous goods, including from local businesses.
